Factors to Consider with Orthodontics for Teens

If your teen chooses braces, they have the option of metal or clear self-ligating braces, a modern form of braces where colors (rubber bands) can be changed at each office visit.
Does your teen prefer a discreet treatment?
Is your teen a social butterfly who likes to take the stage? Are they apprehensive about flashing a mouthful of brackets and wires? Although we believe braces are still a rad option and always will be, we understand that they aren’t every teen’s cup of tea.
For teens who prefer a less noticeable treatment option, we may suggest:
- Ceramic self-ligating braces: Ceramic braces have tooth-colored brackets that blend in with your smile while the self-ligating system appeals to comfort with less friction. These ones take a more modern approach to traditional braces!
- Invisalign: Invisalign clear aligners are practically invisible when in place. They’re made of high-quality, custom-made, BPA-free plastic.
Your teen can smile in confidence with any of these treatment options if they’re looking for a discreet orthodontic option.
Does your teen play sports?
Good news! Your teen can play sports no matter which type of braces they choose. Some options may be more preferable than others, but orthodontic treatment won’t put your teen on the sidelines this season.
Sports players may prefer Invisalign clear aligners, because they can be conveniently removed when practicing or playing in games. It’s important that your teen wears a mouthguard, whether they choose Invisalign or braces. If your teen chooses Invisalign, most times they can place their mouthguard right over their aligners. Be sure to purchase mouthguards that can be worn over braces or Invisalign (not a boil-and-bite type). Our favorite brands are Shock Doctor & SISU.
Is your teen dedicated to transforming their smile?
Invisalign treatment requires your teen to practice commitment and dedication. Your teen can remove their clear aligners whenever they need throughout their treatment. This removability feature is a huge benefit for many people especially when it comes to hygiene, but it does require diligence in wearing your aligners at least 20 to 22 hours a day.
If your teen isn’t up for this rewarding challenge, a form of braces may be better suited for them. It’s important that your teen wears their aligners as instructed, in order for their treatment to be as effective as planned.
