THE PRIME PERIOD TO BEGIN ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT IS DURING THE EARLY TEEN YEARS
The early teen years are ideal for correcting common orthodontic problems. The jaws are actively growing during these years, which means they are more susceptible to modification. For many young patients, the optimal time for braces is during the adolescent and early teen years (ages 11-14). The appropriate time to start treatment is determined by the type of malocclusion (misaligned bite condition) present and how far it’s progressed. Treatment will be cut shorter if problematic orthodontic conditions are detected early on, before teeth have completely stabilized.
Luckily for teens, orthodontist treatment is usually completed in one comprehensive phase instead of the early, two-phase treatment approach that is suggested for some patients with more significant problems. Also luckily for teens – braces look pretty rad. For teens who prefer a more discreet option, we offer Invisalign for Teens!
Wearing your retainer prevents future orthodontic treatment
Teens are inevitably thrilled to move on to the next phase of the orthodontic process but should remain mindful of how important the retention phase is. After the removal of braces, patients will receive a retainer, custom-fitted, to maintain their perfect smile as the bone is stabilizing into perfect alignment. Teeth have a tendency to continue moving and adjusting throughout life, making long-term retainer wear necessary to prevent undesirable shifting. Remind your teen to be diligent in wearing his/her retainer to prevent future orthodontic treatment from becoming necessary – again! We say retainers are “Nighttime for a Lifetime” for a reason!
