Root Resorption: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

June 11, 2025

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, you might be wondering about the risk of root resorption—a potential side effect involving the shortening of tooth roots during orthodontic treatment.

The good news? Root damage from braces or Invisalign® is usually insignificant and rarely causes problems.

At Caudill & McNeight Orthodontics, we want to help you understand what root resorption braces and root resorption Invisalign really mean, how to spot the symptoms, and what you can do to protect your smile throughout treatment and beyond.

TL;DR: Can Braces or Invisalign Cause Root Resorption?

  • Yes, braces and Invisalign® can cause minor root resorption—but it’s usually minimal and harmless.
  • Invisalign® may have a lower risk of root resorption than braces.
  • Choosing an experienced orthodontist (like Dr. Caudill, Dr. McNeight and Dr. Naglieri!) and attending regular checkups is key to keeping your smile healthy.

Book your free consultation today and get expert care that protects your smile from start to finish!

What is Root Resorption?

Root resorption is the gradual loss or shortening of the tooth root, a natural process that even helps baby teeth fall out. When teeth move during orthodontic treatment, tiny amounts of your roots may be absorbed by the body. This is generally harmless and expected.

However, in rare cases, root resorption can be more significant, potentially leading to root weakening. Another reason why doctor-monitored care for your orthodontic treatment is so important.

Root Resorption: Braces vs Invisalign

Studies show that both braces and Invisalign can cause some degree of root resorption. Current research suggests severe root resorption is much less frequent that what we saw with the old orthodontic braces in the past. The current technologies incorporated into tooth movement with

Invisalign and our modern braces and wires that are significantly less forceful which has been decreasing the prevalence of root resorption in orthodontic patients.

Dr. Caudill, Dr. McNeight or Dr. Naglieri will help determine the best treatment for you based on your unique dental health, risk factors, and your lifestyle.

Recognizing Root Resorption Symptoms

One challenge with root resorption braces symptoms is that they often go unnoticed because root resorption rarely causes pain or visible signs. The only way to detect it is through regularly scheduled X-rays.

In rare cases, if root resorption progresses without proper monitoring, it can lead to tooth loosening or mobility. That’s why at Caudill and McNeight Orthodontics, we schedule regular check-ups and progress X-rays throughout your treatment to ensure your teeth are moving in a healthy manner from the surface to your roots.

How to Minimize Root Resorption During Orthodontic Treatment

  1. Choose an Experienced Orthodontist: Proper diagnosis and treatment planning by skilled professionals like Dr. Caudill, Dr. McNeight, or Dr. Naglieri are key to minimizing root resorption risk. Your first visit with us includes a comprehensive exam, diagnostic photos, and X-rays to evaluate your whole smile health before starting treatment.
  2. Personalized Treatment Plans: We customize your treatment to fit your needs, which may include recommending Invisalign versus braces.
  3. Regular Check-Ups: We continuously monitor your smile health with progress X-rays and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

What You Can Do to Protect Your Roots

  • Stay the Course: Healthy tooth movement takes time! Rushing treatment can only increase the risk of root damage.
  • Keep All Appointments: Skipping visits can delay treatment and prevent early detection of root resorption.
  • Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene: Brush after every meal and floss daily to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
  • Report Any Changes: If you notice unusual tooth movement or discomfort, give us a text or call.

Don’t Let Root Resorption Worry You!

While root resorption is a natural and mostly harmless part of orthodontic treatment, being proactive and choosing the right smile care team makes all the difference. With expert guidance from our 321 Ortho Team, you can achieve a beautiful, healthy smile comfortably and safely!
