What can I eat with braces? Top Tips! | Caudill and McNeight Orthodontics Skip to the content

What can I eat with braces? Top Tips!

June 7, 2025

Lots of patients ask: “Can I eat after getting braces?” The answer is yes, you can—and you should! But there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind to protect your new braces and your comfort level.

During your first week with braces, your teeth and gums may feel sore as they adjust to gentle pressure exerted by your braces. The best way to ease into treatment? Stick to soft, soothing foods—especially cool ones.

(Bonus: our wires are heat-activated, so colder foods actually help make them more flexible, which can relieve some of that initial soreness. Pretty cool, right?)

To help you transition into your new braces diet like a pro, here are 5 simple and practical tips to keep your smile (and stomach) happy.

TL;DR: What Can You Eat With Braces?

  • You can eat with braces! Just stick to soft foods during your first week and avoid anything hard, sticky, or crunchy.
  • You can eat brownies, chicken nuggets, soft tacos & more—just modify how you eat them.
  • Want zero food restrictions? Ask about Invisalign®—we’re Brevard County’s Top 1% Invisalign Provider!

1. Stick to Soft Foods (Especially in Week One)

Your mouth will be a little sore after getting braces and after each adjustment, so now’s the time to load up your fridge with soft, braces-friendly foods. This isn’t just a one-time thing—plan to return to soft foods for a day or two after every braces adjustment appointment.

Here are some tasty and soothing soft food ideas:

  • Scrambled eggs – Add avocado or cheese for extra flavor!
  • Smoothies – Blend your favorite fruits with yogurt or almond milk.
  • Soft fruits – Bananas, ripe peaches, and cut-up watermelon are perfect for cool, refreshing treats.
  • Soft bread – Choose pastries or rolls without tough crusts.
  • Dairy – Yogurt, cottage cheese, and milk are great protein-rich options.

2. Avoid Sticky or Crunchy Candy (But You Can Still Treat Yourself)

Sticky and chewy sweets like caramel, taffy, or hard candy are no-gos. They can loosen brackets and bend wires—not fun!

That said, not all treats are off-limits. You can still enjoy braces-friendly junk food and satisfy your sweet tooth safely including:

  • Soft chocolate – Think plain chocolate without nuts.
  • Ice cream, sherbet, or sorbet – Cool and soothing!
  • Jello or pudding – Easy to eat and gentle on sore teeth.

Just be sure to brush and floss afterward to keep your braces and teeth clean!

3. Fast Food You Can Eat With Braces

Busy schedule? No problem! There are plenty of soft fast food for braces—just skip the crunchy stuff and make a few adjustments.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet of fast food you can eat with braces:

  • Pizza – Yes, you can eat pizza—just avoid the crust!
  • Chicken nuggets & chicken tenders – Totally fine if you stick with lightly breaded instead of extra crispy-coated tenders.
  • Soft tacos – Pile on your favorite fillings, just skip hard shells.
  • Brownies – Wondering “Can you eat brownies with braces?” Yes! Just make sure they’re nut-free.

4. Chew Slowly & Carefully

It takes time to adjust to chewing with braces. Be gentle with your bite—especially in the first few days—and avoid biting directly into hard foods like apples or corn on the cob. Cutting food into smaller bites helps protect your braces while easing any discomfort.

5. Soothe Soreness With Salt Water

Feeling sore? That’s totally normal during the first few days with braces or after an adjustment.

Here’s an easy home remedy:

  1. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 8 oz. of warm water.
  2. Swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds & spit out.

You can also take Tylenol® or whatever you normally take for a headache too! Both of these methods can help reduce inflammation, discomfort, and speed up healing!

Want to Avoid Diet Restrictions? Invisalign® Might Be for You

Braces aren’t your only option! If you’d prefer not to adjust your diet, Invisalign® clear aligners could be best for you. Because Invisalign trays are removable, you can eat whatever you want when you take them out—no restrictions, no worries.
