Many of our patients who choose Invisalign® clear aligners are also seeking to whiten their teeth for the ultimate, perfect smile. The great part about Invisalign is you can whiten your teeth during Invisalign treatment! You don’t have to wait to complete your treatment to whiten.
We are Brevard County’s only Invisalign Diamond Plus Provider, and we are proud to have earned this distinction that enables us to provide the highest quality of care in Invisalign treatment and teeth whitening during Invisalign.
Our patients often ask us whether they should whiten their teeth before, during or after Invisalign treatment. Here’s what our experienced orthodontists, Dr. Caudill and Dr. McNeight, have to say!
Dr. Caudill shares, “You are welcome to whiten your teeth with our safe and effective whitening gel either during or after your Invisalign treatment. Many enjoy seeing their new smile shine bright at the end of treatment!”
“As a part of many Invisalign patients’ customized plan, tiny attachments are added to the teeth, as they help the clear aligners to adhere and set the right pressure to gradually shift the teeth into place. However, it is still possible to whiten your teeth during Invisalign treatment as the whitening goes inside your teeth (not just on the front of them) and is not affected by the attachments,” says Dr. McNeight.
Drinking Coffee with Invisalign
If you care for your clear aligners properly, they shouldn’t become discolored or opaque. So what about drinking coffee with Invisalign? One of the great benefits of Invisalign is the ability to remove your aligners to eat and drink liquids other than water.
You must remove your clear aligners while drinking coffee. Coffee is infamous for staining teeth, so you can imagine what it can do to clear aligners. Coffee stains the teeth because it contains specific compounds that cause pigmentation to adhere to the teeth.
The same goes for your orthodontic treatment; you don’t want your clear aligners to become coffee-stained brown aligners!
Invisalign Whitening Instructions
If you wish to whiten your teeth during Invisalign treatment, we encourage you to let us know at your next appointment or give us a call! We will explain the Invisalign whitening instructions and answer all of your questions regarding teeth whitening during Invisalign.
- To whiten your teeth, you will apply the safe and effective whitening gel to your treatment via a tube.
- Adjust the whitening gel to ensure that it’s covering the tooth surface within your aligners. We will show you how to do this when we give you the gel.
- Place your aligners back in your mouth as you normally would, and remove any excess gel that squeezes outside of the aligners.
- Let your aligners sit for about 30 minutes in your mouth.
- Remove the aligners, and rinse them and your mouth thoroughly.
Many patients notice whiter teeth after a single treatment!
If you opted for a form of braces instead of Invisalign, we recommend that you wait until your braces are removed to whiten your teeth.
Teeth whitening after Invisalign is equally as effective as teeth whitening during Invisalign! The choice is yours.
